Ice concentration, 25 June 2002

The above image was processed at the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute (AARI) in St Petersburg, Russia. It makes use of the passive microwave sensor data from the United States DMSP satellites to indicate ice concentrations in the vicinity of the vessels Agulhas and Magdalena Oldendorff. The ice concentrations are those observed on Tuesday 25 June, darker colours indicating higher concentrations – see colour scale.

The wind barbs added to the image are the Danish model forecasts for Thursday 27 June, 00h00 UTC ; the predicted 20 knot easterly winds fitted in very well with the actual observation from the Magdalena Oldendorff. Winds continued to decrease and visibility improved considerably allowing the helicopters on the Agulhas to make their first flight to the ice-bound vessel.
